Slang allows “cultural groups to create their own kind of territory through language.” (ethnography) - Lexicographer & Linguist, Ben Zimmer

Vocabulary is the fabric of language. It provides the indispensable tools we use to build bridges of communication with one another. As language changes with time and geography, so does the vocabulary of its users. It evolves as people migrate and interact.

“The earliest known slang was used among criminal groups centuries ago, as a way to keep their communication from being understood by authorities.” (linguistics) - Lexicographer, Jonathan Green aka Mister Slang

Marijuana’s long-standing history of being classified as an illegal drug was the catalyst for the development of a distinct subculture. That subculture spawned a cryptic but sprawling language, i.e., slang. The potentially sweeping decriminalization of marijuana may lessen the need for such a cryptic language. However with increasing availability and ease of use, marijuana consumption is at an all time high [pun intended] and climbing rapidly. Consequently, as the number of its users grows, the verdant vocabulary grows accordingly. Smokabulary vividly documents that evolution.

"If we had no language we'd have nothing." "...we do language. That may be the measure of our lives." - Oracle, Toni Morrison
